East Second Street home burns

By Monday morning, the burned home had been boarded up and caution tape surrounded the property. The Hastings Fire Department reported that, although the outer walls are still standing, the home is a total loss. (Star Gazette photo by Katrina Styx)

A home in the 1100 block of East Second Street burned this past weekend.

The first firefighters on the scene found flames coming out of the front and rear windows on the main level of the two-story home. Within minutes, the fire breached the second level and attic area, said Fire and EMS Director Mike Schutt.

Firefighters began on the defensive from outside the home, as the fire had already spread enough to prevent them from entering. Hastings police officers helped stretch fire hoses and spray water on the fire until more firefighters arrived. Responders were able to leave the scene at about 6 a.m. Sunday, March 30.

No one was inside the home at the time of the fire. Although the walls are still standing, the home is considered a total loss.

Hastings was assisted by the Prescott Fire Department.

Schutt said that the cause of the fire is under investigation and it does not appear to be suspicious.
