Doubles team just misses shot at state tennis meet
Austin Houska and Danny Steiner came about as close as you could get to advancing to the state tennis tournament. Unfortunately for the Hastings doubles team, they didn’t quite make it in.
Houska and Steiner competed Tuesday in the section finals, trying to earn one of two qualifying spots in doubles. The team lost in a match for second place, 6-3, 7-6 (7-6), to a team from Rochester Century.
They had a busy day of play on Tuesday, starting with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to the No. 1 seeded team from Rochester Mayo. Steiner and Houska, the No. 4 seeded team of four teams at the section finals, then beat the No. 3 seeds from Mayo, 7-5, 6-3.
That set up the match for second with the Century team.
In the sub-section tournament, Houska and Steiner pulled off a major upset to advance to Tuesday. They beat the sub-section’s No. 1 seeded team from Lakeville North to advance. Houska and Steiner were seeded No. 4.
They won, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
Houska and Steiner won their first-round match over a team from Albert Lea, 6-0, 6-0. They then beat the no. 5 seeded team from Winona, 6-2, 6-2. That set up the matchup with the team from Lakeville North.
