Donnal Nelson, 84
Donnal Nelson, age 84, of Hastings, Minn., passed away from ALS on Dec. 31. He was born on May 20, 1929, in Hallock, Minn., to Victor and Margaret Nelson.
He is survived by his wife Delia; and step-children Sean (Lisa) Simmons, Kris (Ken) Schetina, and Michelle Thomas. He is also survived by his twin brother Dennis Nelson; and sister Marge Schauble; as well as numerous nieces; nephews; and cousins.
He graduated from high school in Lake Bronson, Minn., in 1947. He and his brother joined the U.S. Navy in 1948, and served during the Korean War. After serving in the Navy he started an apprenticeship at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash. He worked at the shipyard until he retired as a Ships Scheduler supervisor in 1984.
He moved to Hastings, Minn., after his first wife, Laura, passed away in Port Orchard, Wash., in 1990. In 1991, he was married to Delia Simmons.
Don was a long time member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. At one time he was the commander of VFW Post 1210, and for many years he participated as an Honor Guard Member. His hobbies included ham radio operation for over 30 years, as well as traveling to stay connected with friends and family.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, at St. Philip's Lutheran Church in Hastings, with visitation at 10 a.m. and a luncheon to follow the service.
