Dance for fun and funds this Saturday, April 9
Dance Marathon 2011, sponsored by the Mission Mexico participants, will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 9, in Seton Hall at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2935 W. 15th St.
The proceeds go directly to the youth who are participating in this year's Mission Mexico trip at the end of June. As with the most recent mission in 2009, this mission trip will be to El Paso, Texas, with the young people and leaders staying at the University of Texas, El Paso, and then going out for mission work, home building and remodeling and flood restoration. There will also be work at a nearby ecological development.
Each hour of the marathon has a different music theme, so people can pick and choose when to attend. The music is church-appropriate.
Mission Mexico participants are the only ones who must dance for the full 12 hours. They have been collecting pledges from people to gain funds.
The marathon, for anyone and everyone, costs $5 per hour or $10 all day. A family rate is $15. Each person who attends will receive a wristband which allows them to come and go throughout the day.
Of course, to replenish the energy, there will be concessions for sale during the day.
The day begins with a fiesta kick-off - paying respect to the Mission Mexico trip. A zumba fitness class will follow that, with an instructor provided by the Hastings Area YMCA. During this 10 a.m. hour, child care will be provided. The Kidz Bop is at 11 a.m., followed by dance craze at noon.
Country and line dancing follows at 1 p.m. Then it is swing time, again with an instructor provided.
The "Oldies but goodies" take stage at 3 p.m., followed by an 80s dance party. Salsa is at 5 p.m. Again, there will be lessons.
Techno/club dance is at 6 p.m., pop rocks following. The evening concludes with a "Just Dance" contest. Prizes will be awarded.
