He and his family have enjoyed the past 22 years living in Hastings, but now there will be a change.

Dan and Julia Greil have sold their home on Vermillion Street and will move to St. Paul.

The move means Dan Greil will have to resign his seat on the Hastings School Board. He was first elected in 2006 and re-elected in 2010. There are 2 and 1/2 years remaining of his term.

"We're just going into another phase of life," Greil said earlier this week. The couple and their two children moved to Hastings 22 years ago.

Greil previously served on the Hastings Planning Commission for six years.

"That was a great experience," he said. "I learned a lot about the city."

He ran for School Board in the fall of 2006.

"I felt I was in a position to offer a choice for School Board - I could represent both the taxpayers and the students," said Greil. His daughter and son had both graduated from Hastings High School, "and I could be a voice for everyone," he said.

The School Board experience has been an "excellent" one, he said. Serving has provided the opportunity to learn more about the School District.

"The administration and the School Board people we have are so good," said Greil.

A definite date for his resignation has not been determined, said Greil. The School District is in the midst in negotiations and he is part of that process. He wants to see them to their conclusion.

The replacement process could be connected to that date. If Greil resigns before the upcoming School Board election filing period is completed, then the remaining two years on his term could be filled through an election period. If he does not resign by the filing period, then the position likely becomes an appointed one for the remaining two years of the term.

The terms of Dan Cater, Angie McGinnis and Teresa Moes expire at the end of the year. Their terms are four years in length. The filing period opens July 30 and closes two weeks later.
