Minnaert coached Hastings for years, and had numerous strong seasons and strong athletes pass through the program during his tenure. Success was no stranger.

It appears success will be found by this year's team, too.

"To beat Wayzata, that's pretty tough," Hastings coach John Dewall said. "It was a phenomenal race. The girls are getting their confidence going. Confidence leads to success. Now they believe they can really perform well as a team."

Hastings had five runners in the top 17, including three in the top five.

Results went like this: Kelly Pechous, second, 16:14.11; Maddy O'Brien, third, 16:37.14; Bri Strandberg, fifth, 16:45.49; Alicia Beattie, 16th, 17:24.99; Clarese Mancl, 17th, 17:27.95; and Brittany Huneke, 51st, 19:35.78.

The meet was held at St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park.

Boys

The Hastings boys team finished sixth out of 10 teams. Osseo won the meet with 60 points. Hastings had 171.

The top Hastings runner was Michael Rough, who was running in his first meet of the season as he works his way back from an injury.

"He ran pretty tough," Dewall said. "He's got some making up to do. He's trying to catch up. He'll be tough if he gets this thing recovered and keeps it going."

Results from the meet went like this: Rough, 17th, 18:30.53; Chase Keilers, 32nd, 19:27.36; Matt Rogness, 33rd, 19:30.20; Wyatt Behrends, 35th, 19:33.37; Tom Shingledecker, 54th, 20:54.06; Zach Benning, 55th, 20:58.24; and Jon Erickson, 60th, 21:16.03.

The Hastings girls junior varsity team didn't field a complete team, but there were three girls competing in the meet. Results went like this:

Maria Yandrasits, 48th, 20:40.90; Stephanie Lindgren, 58th, 20:57.52; and Emily Hughes, 65th, 21:13.81.
