Contractor begins resurfacing work on 61
Hardrives, Inc. has completed most of the concrete sidewalk and pedestrian ramps along Vermillion Street in Hastings and has begun the resurfacing work on the street.
The contractor began the milling and resurfacing of the street on Tuesday, July 6. The work began at the southern end of the project - near Cannon Street, in the northbound lane, moving north to Fifth Street. One lane of traffic in both directions will remain open during the work. Delays are expected.
"The contractor plans to begin the milling and paving operations on Tuesday, July 6," said Minnesota Department of transportation public affairs coordinator J.P. Gillach. "Barring any weather delays, they will complete their milling and paving operations on or before Monday, July 19."
"The contractor is aware of the Rivertown Days festival (which begins at the end of next week) and plans to be completed by that time," said project engineer Diane Langenbach.
All work must be completed before construction begins on the new Highway 61 bridge.
The work on the sidewalks and the ramps at intersections along the street were part of this project, Gillach said. Some signal work has also been completed, including the new signal at County Road 47 and Vermillion Street (the city and Dakota County paid for part of the cost). Audible pedestrian signals at 10th and 15th streets were installed. Additional sidewalks were poured along Vermillion Street (near the AmericInn) at 24th and 25th streets. The pedestrian ramps at intersections were improved to meet the American with Disability Act regulations.
The resurfacing project will extend the pavement service life by eight to 10 years. The existing surface was installed in 1998.
During the resurfacing of the street, traffic will be reduced to two lanes (one lane in each direction) during working hours for construction on the opposite two lanes. The paving work should be completed in about 10 working days.
A MnDOT business liaison will work with businesses to provide timely information and updates during the construction.
The estimated cost of the project is about $900,000.
