Construction begins on new showroom at Valley Chevrolet

Crews started gutting the inside of Valley Chevrolet's showroom last week and started clearing the exterior of the building as well in preparation for a new showroom to be built there.

The existing showroom, which has been in place since its construction in 1985, is scheduled to be torn down the end of this week. Steel for the frame of the new building is expected to arrive the third week of September, and Valley Chevrolet is hoping the project is done by mid-November, said General Manager Tom Ward.

General Motors dealerships across the country are getting facelifts just like the one coming to Valley Chevrolet. The remodeling is part of a GM initiative to give its dealerships a uniform, instantly recognizable look. Valley Chevrolet is in the second wave of dealership projects.

Also getting a facelift - although not such an extensive one - is the Valley Buick GMC of Hastings, located just north of the city.

Construction at Valley Chevrolet will involve just the front portion of the complex.

"We're doing everything from the service and parts area forward, to (Highway) 316," Ward said.

The new showroom will be a rectangular shape rather than the existing five-sided room, and about twice as large. Inside will be a new customer lounge and refreshments area, an open parts retail counter where customers can go directly for new car parts and new sales offices. An enclosed service entrance is also planned.

Valley Chevrolet will be open throughout the construction. Customers can access the dealership using the entrance on Spiral Boulevard. Signs have been posted to direct traffic.
