The Boomers and Better program of Hastings Community Education is continuing its second season of "Coffee and Conversation" by talking about retirement next month and all interested are invited.

The Jan. 17 topic is "Retirement: Is Every Day a Saturday?" and will be presented by Hastings resident and former Allina Clinic staff physician Dr. Bill Spinelli.

This series began last year and was initiated by the Boomers' Summit, said Hastings Community Education director Mary O'Brien. Many of the ideas are generated within small group discussions.

"So much of the wisdom comes from one another," she said. "These are topics of relevance and the model for the discussions already exists."

The ideas for the discussions are generated in several ways, O'Brien said. The Boomers Advisory Council has input, DARTS collaborates with the group and AARP offers discussion about different topics.

Last year's topics included caring for grandparents and learning the challenges of Medicare. This year's topics have included grown children returning home to live.

The Jan. 17 program will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Tilden Community Center. The presentation includes discussion such questions as: How do I picture my retirement? Will I spend more money eating out, traveling and remodeling my home? Where will I live? Do I want to volunteer and if so, what do I want to do?

Spinelli is the co-founder of Encore Transitions through the University of Minnesota. Encore Transitions is a series designed to help create pathways and prepare for a successful post-career life by focusing on personal, professional and social satisfaction, as well as timely financial matters. Whether through work, service, learning, or other personally meaningful activities, Encore Transitions emphasizes post-career engagement as a foundation for vitality, happiness and healthy longevity.

They are not always heavy subjects either, said O'Brien. Lighter ones, such as travel, have proven popular as well.

The Coffee and Conversation series is free, but preregistration is highly recommended and can be made by calling 480-7670.
