City Council: Volunteer network, street improvements and community feedback
The Hastings City Council will meet Monday, March 21, at 7 p.m. at City Hall. Here's a look at what's up for discussion.
The council will endorse an online volunteer network called United in Hastings: The E-Volunteer Network. Scheduled to launch in April, the website will be a place for people to go to search for and sign up for volunteer opportunities.
Gearing up for the summer construction season, city staff is recommending the council order the 2011 infrastructure improvements, approve the plans and authorize staff to advertise for project bids. The proposed reconstruction covers about 3.75 miles in multiple neighborhoods. Streets to be affected include 11th Street East, 12th Street West, 14th Street West, 15th Street East, 17th Street East, Bailly Street, Blueberry Lane, Blueberry Court, Hillside Street, Hillside Court, Honeysuckle Lane, McNamara Street, North Frontage Road, Prairie Street, Rosemary Court, Sumner Street, Sun Valley Lane,
View Court, Whispering Court and Whispering Lane. The city has budgeted $3.5 million for the project, and construction is expected to begin in late May or early June. Most of the work would be done by the end of September. At Monday's meeting, the council will also hold a public hearing on the project to allow the public to comment on the plans.
The council will also consider putting $9,500 toward the cost of a community survey for the Parks and Recreation Department. The city has already received a $12,500 grant for the survey, which has a total cost of $22,000. The survey would request residents' comments on the past, current and future condition of active living in Hastings. Decision Resources would conduct 400 phone interviews of 60 questions each. The additional $9,500 would give the city the opportunity to ask more questions not necessarily regarding parks and recreation. Staff is recommending the cost be spread proportionally across any departments that would have questions addressed in the survey.
