The Hastings City Council will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, May 20, at City Hall. Here's a look at what's on the agenda.
The council will swear in and welcome a new police officer, Christopher Nelson, to the Hastings police force. Nelson was hired following an extensive search and testing process.
Five properties in Hastings will receive Heritage Preservation Awards. The properties are recognized as good examples of properly maintained or restored properties. Properties recognized this year are 701 W. Fifth St., 505 W. Seventh St., 1011 Ramsey St., 321 W. Eighth St. and Schoolhouse Square.
A public hearing will be held to receive comments on the Municipal Cooperative Construction Agreement for the 18th Street/Highway 291 improvement project. The transfer of the highway to the city's control is expected to occur by early fall this year. The agreement allows the city to perform the improvement project with MnDOT's permission, allows the city full control over project management and clarifies the city's maintenance responsibility once the final turnback has occurred. The agreement also addresses how money will flow from MnDOT to the city. It requires the city to request an advance of funding from its State Aid for Local Transportation funds, which amounts to borrowing funding from future allocations that the city would receive to its State Aid account. However, MnDOT has requested within its transportation bill for the 2014 fiscal year an appropriation that once approved and available (early July), will be paid to the city to cover the expense. The reimbursement will be deposited back within the city's State Aid account to make it whole.
Steve Kordosky, MnDOT bridge project manager, will give a project update to the council regarding the new Highway 61 bridge. The update will include the upcoming traffic switch to the new bridge in early June as well as information about the demolition of the current bridge.
A final plat approval will also come before the council for two new single family home plots in the South Pines seventh addition.
