Schumacher places first in poetry contest

Joanna Schumacher of Hastings took first place in the Dakota County Library's poetry contest.  There were more than 290 entries total between the adults, children and teens.  Joanna, 15, took first place in the 15- to 18- year-old category.  You can see her poem, A Memory Worth Remembering, and the other winners on the library website: Libraries/Programs/Poetry Winners.htm.


Schappa graduated from the U of M

Jill Schappa, the daughter of Pete and Jeanette Schappa of Hastings, graduated on May 12 from the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). While attending the college, Jill received the following honors and awards: Schlotthauer 2012 Award - Demonstration of a strong interest and outstanding ability in veterinary surgery and/or veterinary pathobiology; Merck-Merial Veterinary Scholar Poster Winner 2010 - Most outstanding poster in the Summer Scholar Program; Phi Zeta Kappa Honor Society of Veterinary Medicine 2010, 2012 - Award recognizing and promoting scholarship and research in matters pertaining to the welfare and diseases of animals; and the Caleb Dorr Certificate 2009. She was among the top academic students of the second-, third- and fourth-year classes. Originally scheduled to complete her doctorate with the class of 2011, Jill deferred her final year of clinical training to pursue research full time as a result of being the first-ever veterinary student (previously only given to medical students) to be awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Research Institute (HHMI) - Burroughs Welcome Fellowship funding her selected project, "Development of Targeted Toxins for Cancer Therapy Using Comparative Models." Jill plans to start her residency at the University of Minnesota in Clinical Pathology in July of this year and continue doing comparative human and animal cancer research.

Humbert and Myers graduate from Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Katie Humbert and Alexander Myers of Hastings were among more than 3,700 prospective candidates for degree attending University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee commencement exercises that were held on Sunday, May 20, in Milwaukee. Humbert graduated with a MS-Master of Science, College of health Sciences; and Myers, with a BA-Bachelor of Arts, college of Letters and Science.

Gandier named on Furman University dean's list

Michael Gandier of Hastings was named on the Furman University spring 2012 dean's list. He is the son of Beth and Phil Gandier.

Hillstrom recipients of the MMAA MSU scholarships

Anders Hillstrom, son of Doug and Raidi Hillstrom of Hastings, was one of the recipients of the Minot Model Alumni Association MSU scholarships available this year in the amount of $500. To qualify they must be a descendent of a Minot Model HS graduate or a student who attended and satisfactorily completed the full 1967-68 school year as a sophomore or junior at Minot Model. Ander's grandfather, Lowell Larson, was a 1947 graduate of Minot Model.

McCallson graduates from the U of Manitoba

Bonni McCallson graduated on May 29, 2012 from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts degree in global political economy.

She is a 2007 graduate of Hastings High School and currently resides in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She is the daughter of Jerry and Sherri McCallson.
