Campus and people notes ending May 24
Two students were selected as the Hastings Area Rotary Club's students of the month for May. They are Molly Streiff and Alex Lewanski.
Chad Terry, Hastings High School Counselor and nominating teacher for Streiff, had this to say about her:
"Friendly, creative and humble are all words that describe the quiet confidence displayed on a daily basis by senior Molly Streiff. Molly works hard, treats others well and is just an all around kind and fun girl. On top of her hard work in the classroom (she has earned a cumulative GPA of 3.7) and achievements in groups like Riverside Company Showchoir, HHS Vocal Jazz, Art Club and Link Crew, Molly is committed to working with volunteer organizations and believes in helping people who are less fortunate that her. The volunteer portion of her resume has more content than any other section. Just last week I was reading a scholarship essay that Molly had written and she described to me how strongly she believes that individuals need to achieve but even as important, at certain times, that they give back to their community by being engaged and thoughtful citizens. I believe this dedication to achievement and determination to make a difference truly set Molly Streiff apart. She is committed to service above self and would be an ideal candidate for the May Rotary Student of the Month."
Laura Zabel, HHS math teacher and nominating teacher for Lewanski, had this to say about him:
"I would like to nominate Alex Lewanski to receive the Rotary Student of the Month for May. I had Alex as a student in Honors Pre Calculus and he was highly motivated, inquisitive and always one of the top in the class. But beyond that he was a leader, who asked great questions and was a role model to his classmates. I relied on him to work with other students who struggled and he always did this with a compassion and maturity beyond his years. Beyond the classroom I had the privilege to see and work with Alex in other areas like show choir and band. Again and again Alex would jump in where help was needed and go the extra mile to be sure not only he was well prepared, but that his peers were as well. With his open and fun personality he works well with everyone and is a valuable part of every organization he participates in. He has been a strong leader as a NHS officer and member of the soccer team. He is truly taking advantage of all our school and community have to offer through academics, athletics and the arts. He is a model of who we want representing our school and community. There is no one more deserving of this award than Alex!"
