Businesses do their part for festival
A number of Hastings area businesses are holding special activities during this year's Rivertown Days.
Schoolhouse Square Rocks, sponsored by businesses - Green Mill, Premier Bank, Verizon, Dunn Bros, Affinity Credit, Schoolhouse Scoop and Anytime Fitness - includes events throughout the day Saturday, July 16.
A three-on-three basketball tournament is scheduled at 9 a.m.; an open adult basketball three-on-three tournament will be held at 1p.m.
Premier Bank will hold a petting zoo from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The seventh annual Schoolhouse Square spelling bee will be held at noon. Categories are ages 5 to 8, 9 to 11, and 12 to 14.
The Verizon Text Message Contest will be held at 1 p.m.; Anytime Fitness potato sack race is at 1:30 p.m.; Schoolhouse Scoop will hold its ice cream eating contest at 2 p.m.
Schoolhouse Square Still Rocking, under the tent, will play from 8 p.m. to midnight. Live music will be the entertainment. Midlife Chryslers perform from 8 p.m. to midnight, Friday, July 15, at Green Mill.
Registration for the contests can be completed at the individual businesses. Prizes will be awarded at the contests.
The Downtown Business Association will hold sidewalk sales from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 16; and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 17.
The Coliseum Sports Bar and Grill, 1840 Vermillion St., will offer live music by "Heartbreaker" from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Friday, July 15.
Duggie's Tent Dance will be held from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Friday, July 15, at DuGarel's Bar, 3475 Vermillion St. "Fistful of Ladies" opens for Martin Zellar.
The Eagles Club, 1220 Vermillion St., will hold euchre, washer toss and bean bag tournaments Saturday, July 16. An auxiliary bake sale will be held at 9 a.m. Registration forms for the tournaments are available at the club.
