St. Mary's-Basswood Grove will host its 12th annual corn and pig roast, and the second annual silent auction, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, on the grounds of the historic church in Denmark Township.

Relax in the shaded beauty of the churchyard's glorious basswood trees and adjacent cemetery, and enjoy live music from the Grovers (the church's bluegrass musicians) and the Sacred Harp (ShapeNote) singers in the newly updated Guild Hall.

Admission is free and food will be available for purchase - fresh corn on the cob, barbecued pork sandwiches, hotdogs, brats, root beer floats, beer, soda, and other beverages and treats. There will also be games for the kids, and a bake sale.

The silent auction will be held in a large tent next to the Guild Hall and will feature dozens of items such as original artwork, a cottage stay in Cape Cod, an Asian meal for eight, homemade pumpkin pies at Thanksgiving, restaurant certificates, theater tickets, and much more. The bidding will remain open until 7 p.m..

The event will be held rain or shine. Join church members and others to relive the old-fashioned pleasure of relaxing over some favorite foods with old and new friends, while enjoying good music and the beauty of nature.

• Rocket Blast Off (ages 7-12): 9 a.m. to noon, Aug. 3, 4 and 6;

• Horses 101: A Class for Pre-equestrians (ages 8 through adult): 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 14;

• Firearms Safety (ages 11 and up): 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 17 through 21, and Aug. 22 (morning);

• Babysitting Training (kids entering grades five through eight): 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 18 and 20;

Learn from the Master Gardeners

Learn to grow and cultivate vegetables in a small-space garden each Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. through September 12, at the Dakota County Master Gardener Research and Display Gardens in UMore Park, 1605 W. 160th Street in Rosemount.

HHS class of 1969 will meet

Plans are under way for the 40th anniversary year of the Hastings High School class of 1969. The reunion for the class will be Aug. 15 at the Emerald Greens Golf Course. The event will include social time, a program, dinner, music and a golf event.

PLEASANT HILL LIBRARY

Library offers adult computer classes

Free computer classes for beginners will be offered at Pleasant Hill Library. Call 438-0200 or register online at www.dakotacounty.us/ library. The class is limited to 10.

Classes in the upcoming months are:

• Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Library Secrets Revealed. Registration for the class has begun.

This class is designed for people who are unsure about how to best use the library, including using the library's electronic resources and learning where things are located in the library. Students will gain an overview of the Dakota County Library system, and learn about new resources available within the system. Students will also learn to effectively use the library's catalog and electronic tools. A tour of the library will follow the classroom instruction; and

• Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Legal Resources.

YMCA

Parents can have

a 'Night Out'

Parents can bring their 1- to 10-year-olds to the Hastings Area YMCA from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, and enjoy a night out while their kids play games, swim, do crafts and more.

The cost is $20 ($15 for members).

Nininger Planning Commission

There will be no Nininger Planning Commission meetings August through November, 2009. The next planning commission meeting is scheduled at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, at the Nininger Town Hall, 12390 Ivanhoe Way, Hastings.

Youth Night

is July 31

YMCA Youth Night is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, July 31, for youth in grades three through five. There will be music, dancing, games, food, open swim and more.

Leduc

Friends of the LeDuc meet Aug. 11

Friends of LeDuc of Historic Hastings will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at the estate. Plans for the Aug. 22 event, "Farm, Food & Fun Fair," will be discussed.

The program will be about a Civil War traveling trunk put together by a HMS social studies teacher, and he will share with the group the contents and history of the artifacts in the trunk.

The event is free, and members and the public are encouraged to attend.

Regina Medical Center

Enjoy an ice cream social July 31

The Regina Medical Center Auxiliary will hold an ice cream social for residents and their families and friends, hospital and clinic employees, and auxiliary members from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, July 31, in the Regina Senior Living patio area.

Complimentary ice cream sundaes with a choice of toppings, cookies, lemonade and coffee will be served.

Entertainment will be provided by the Red Hat Spiralettes and "Sweet Memories," a combo of accordion and banjo.

Grief Coalition

'Keeping God Close' is topic

"Keeping God Close in My Grief" will be the topic when the Hastings Area Grief Coalition meets from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug 6, at the Hastings Area Senior Center, 213 Ramsey St. Vickie and Paris Pasch will present the topic. They will share how their faith helped them to move forward following their loss.

The July 30 topic will be "How My Grief has Changed Me" presented by Chaplain Linda Lund of Augustana Care Center.

All Grief Coalition meetings are open to the community.

Hastings Arts Council

Artists needed for 'Tastes of the Arts'

The Hastings Arts Council invites artists to participate in the Hastings Taste of the Arts Saturday, Sept. 26. Any artist who wishes to participate must apply by Aug. 15. All visual art, photography, sculpture, mixed media, fabric, wood, metal or glass will be acceptable.

The event will include a day of art, music, theater and other activities at six locations in the Hastings area. To kick off the day, the LeDuc Estate will host a theater group called the Black Dirt Theater in a performance of "Paul Bunyan: An Unlikely Beginning to a Tall Tale," followed by a pancake breakfast.

Other venues will be the Alexis Bailly Vineyard, the home of Aaron Moen, the Great River Art Gallery, the Hastings Beauty School veranda and the Second Street Coffee Shop.

Hastings Family Service

HFS partners with farm market

Hastings Family Service has partnered with the farm market vendors to collect fresh produce.

The public can support the farm market vendors and Hastings Family Service by buying fresh produce and jams and putting their purchases in the designated bins at the farm market or bring their donations to Hastings Family Service.

The farm market is held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Saturdays at the Westview Mall across from SuperAmerica. For more information, call Laurie at 437-7134.
