Bridge opens four lanes

The Hastings bridge opened all four lanes this afternoon, slightly ahead of a previously announced Saturday opening.

The southbound lanes opened first at about 4:30 p.m., followed by the northbound lanes about an hour and a half later.

Aesthetic lighting is also visible this weekend. Lights that run the length of the underside of the arches have been turned on so crews can test the system. They will be turned off following the test until the bridge work is entirely finished.

The video shows crews moving construction barrels and opening up the final northbound lane to traffic. Among the first vehicles that got to take advantage of the extra lane was one of Hastings' ambulances.

The first several drivers on the previously unused lane kicked up a large dust cloud.
