The Hastings boys swimming team finished second at last weekend's Packer Invitational in South St. Paul. The only team to beat Hastings at the meet was Eau Claire Memorial, one of the best teams in Wisconsin.

"We were pretty happy with that," Hastings coach Gerry Rupp said. "We mixed the lineup up a bit. The boys swam quite well. We had a lot of season-best swims on Saturday."

Elliott Wilcox won one event at the meet and took second in another.

Thomas Everson placed third in the 100 backstroke.

"That was totally out of nowhere," Rupp said.

Vs East Ridge

Hastings lost to East Ridge on Thursday night in a Suburban East Conference dual meet.

Rupp called the loss "disappointing," but isn't going to dwell on a regular-season loss in the conference.

"We don't worry about wins and losses at all this year," he said. "Our team is so young. I keep telling myself that we're basically throwing a middle school team against high school kids. Any kind of positive is a gain for us. "These boys are asked to do something difficult, having to go against juniors and seniors as eighth-graders. You forget how young most of these kids are.

"The kids have really done a great job, especially considering the disadvantage they are in."

Had diving not been part of the meet, Hastings would have actually tied the Raptors. East Ridge had three divers and they were able to pick up 13 points in that event.

The Raptors had a great night in the pool, making Hastings' night a challenging one.

"They swam a lot better than they did two weeks ago before the break," Rupp said. "They improved considerably, but it was a good meet."
