Boys golfers place eighth at SEC meet
The Hastings boys golf team placed eighth out of 10 teams Monday at a Suburban East Conference event at Forest Hills.
Hastings shot a 343.
"We can do a lot better," said Matthew Radke, one of the members of this year's team. "We've all been kind of struggling, but we'll get it together. It's coming."
Radke shot an 84 to lead the Raiders. Radke said he's been struggling to get on the greens in regulation.
"I've got to start playing better in the conference meets," he said. "I just haven't been hitting the greens in regulation. I've been hitting the fairways and getting up and down. I just haven't been hitting the greens. I'm just kind of struggling.
"I've been out hitting a lot of golf balls at the driving range. Every day, pretty much. I'm going down there and hitting for an hour and a half, and going out and playing nine or 18."
Nick Tusa and Jacob Cooper each shot 85s
Mark Huneke shot 89 and Sam Otto and Dominick Bacon both shot 90.
Radke led Hastings on the greens with just 29 putts.
The Raiders had just one birdie, turned in by Cooper.
The team had 38 pars, 52 bogeys, 16 double bogeys and one triple.
"The longer par fours and hazards throughout the course created some double bogeys that hurt us," coach Pete McGinnis said. "The par four 15th hole played at 435 yards over water gave us some trouble. At one point in the round, six groups were waiting on the tee."
Hastings had one eighth-grader and five freshmen in the lineup.
"Experience in this game is so important and making good decisions off the tee will continue to create better scores," McGinnis said. Hitting more fairways off the tee and getting on the green in regulation is our main focus."
Hastings travels to Highland National on Thursday and then the club returns home May 24 to play at the Hastings Country Club.
