Boys golf takes first at Hastings match
The Hastings boys golf team took top honors in its host invitational last week.
The Raiders golfers tallied a 304 with a team-high 18 birdies to take first place in the 10-team Suburban East Conference match on Thursday, May 16, at Hastings Country Club.
Sam Otto led with way, shooting a 73 with six birdies and six pars.
"Sam has really been putting well lately and today only needed 29 putts," Raiders coach Pete McGinnis said after the match.
Jacob Cooper finished with a 75 after shooting 39 on the front nine. He had four birdies and nine pars. Matthew Radke hit 12 greens en route to a 76.
Mark Huneke rounded out the Raiders scoring with an 80, completing his round with a 37 on the back nine after shooting a 43 before the turn.
"That really says a lot about our team when we come back after a tough front side," McGinnis said.
Forest Lake finished second with a 306 in the Hastings match.
The Raiders found plenty of greens in a Wednesday, May 15, match at Highland National in St. Paul. The team posted a 307, good for fourth place and 11 strokes behind match winner Stillwater's 296.
Otto and Cooper led Hastings with a 73 and 77, respectively. Radke tallied a 78 while Huneke and Tusa both carded a 79. Dominick Bacon scored an 80.
"The boys played pretty well all around," McGinnis said. "The course was not very long so we had a lot of chances to hit greens."
Huneke found 13 greens and Cooper hit a dozen. Tusa led the Raiders with 11 pars.
