"I was super happy," Fox said. "I hadn't won since sections last year."

His score was largely due to his short game.

"My short game was really good," he said, and so was his ball striking, he added.

While on the course, Fox didn't realize he was on track to win the tournament.

"I didn't think I was playing particularly well," he said.

Fox's best score was a 69 he shot last year. He's been working with the pros at the Hastings Country Club to improve his consistency and lower his numbers, he said, and hopefully he'll be ready for the section tournament, which will be June 1 and June 4.

"I should be coming around by then," Fox said.

Also at the Dakota County Championship, Matt Radke scored 83, Brock Johnson scored 84, Nick Tusa scored 88, Sam Otto scored 91 and Cole Carrigan scored 92. As a team, the Raiders placed sixth out of 12 teams.

A few days earlier, May 4, the Raiders finished eighth out of 10 teams. Radke posted the best score for the team with an 81.

"He was outstanding off the tee and played the course smart in windy conditions," head coach Pete McGinnis said.

Tusa and Johnson both ended the day with 83s. Fox shot 84.

"He only had 28 putts on some very difficult greens," McGinnis said.

Jake Cooper shot 92, and Sam Otto shot 91.

On Monday the boys traveled to the White Bear Lake Yacht Club and came home with a team score of 342, which put them in last place out of 10 teams. They were led by Otto, an eighth-grader, who shot a 79.

"This was a great score on a very difficult course," McGinnis said.

Fox shot an 88, Tusa shot 84, Radke shot 96, Cooper shot 98 and Johnson shot 91.

"The kids that had not played the course found trouble off the tee and with their second shots," McGinnis said.

The Raiders' next match is Monday, May 17, at the Stillwater Country Club. The conference tournament is Wednesday, May 19.
