Boys Golf: Fox settles for an 83 on first day of state golf meet
Hastings High School junior Max Fox shot an 83 at the first round of the state golf tournament Tuesday at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.
For most players, an 83 at a difficult course like Bunker Hills would signal a pretty good round. But Fox was hoping for better.
"He's happy to be here, but he's also looking to compete for the championship," Hastings coach Pete McGinnis said.
Fox had 35 putts in the round and one birdie.
"He was having trouble out of the tee box," McGinnis said. "He was going back and forth between his driver, and his three-wood. He was getting out of position for his second shot.
"He scrambled, and made some par saves, but the 35 putts really hurt him."
The leader shot a one-under-par 71, putting Fox 12 shots out of the lead.
"All in all, it's a great experience for him," McGinnis said. "I keep telling him, it's very difficult to get here, and that's the big thing.
"He's enjoying the experience despite not playing as well as he wanted to."
