A strong first half of defense kept the Hastings Raiders in their non-conference game last week against Red Wing. While the effort was there defensively, it appeared as though a lid had been put in place on the basket for the Raiders, especially in the second half.

The end result? A 58-36 loss to the Wingers.

"In the first half, our defensive play was the best that we have had so far this season," coach Chad Feikema said. "I was really pleased with our defensive effort, especially in the first half, but it was just one of those things -- we did a lot of things well, but we could not put the ball in the basket."

In the second half, Hastings made just seven of 32 shots.

"I didn't dare pull out the calculator and get the percentage on that," Feikema said. "It's not pretty."

Games like last week's were a concern for Feikema this year.

"We graduated two 1,000-point scorers from last year, and one of our concerns was where are our points going to come from, and will we be able to finish?" he said. "This was one of those games where we couldn't finish."

Shot selection wasn't a problem for Hastings, Feikema said. Most of the team's attempts came in the paint.

"We had a lot of really good shots we just didn't make."

Still, Feikema was excited by what he saw from his team defensively.

"If we can defend like we defended in the first half on a regular basis, we're going to have a chance to win games," he said. "That's where it all starts."

Tony Hammes led Hastings in scoring with 14 points.

Also scoring were: Josh Monjeau 4, Ben Knoll 6, Peter Schultz 4, Darius Wilkerson 6, Quintan Weaver 2.

Monjeau's game stood out to Feikema.

"He has the ability to be a dynamic player for us," Feikema said. "This game was a big step forward for him. He did some nice things out there for us."

Hastings is 1-3 so far.
