Boat launch in Hastings closed for construction
The Hastings public boat launch is closed while construction crews repair the launch and renovate the site.
The launch has been partially closed for the past few seasons, since the city discovered river currents had caused the lower portion of the west launch to fall away. Because of the launch's location on the Mississippi River, the city is working with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to repair the boat launch.
Along with the boat launch repair, several ground improvements are also being made. The east parking lot will be repaved; the west parking lot will be paved and have a turnaround loop added; and a storm water retention area and aquatic invasive species prevention implements will be added. Measures are also being taken to protect the repaired boat launch from the flow of the river, and there will be space for two boats to launch side by side at the same time.
"The DNR and the city of Hastings apologize for any inconvenience during construction," said Rachel Hintzman, DNR Parks and Trails area supervisor. "When the project is complete, we will have a high quality facility in place for fishing and boating."
Work on the boat launch began last Thursday. It is expected to be completed by mid-November, according to the DNR.
The parking lot and launch are closed for the remainder of the 2012 season. The nearest alternative public boat launches are on the St. Croix River at St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park and at the confluence of the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers in Prescott, Wis. Private boat launches are also located on the Mississippi River at Kings Cove Marina and Hub's Landing and Marina just north of Hastings.
