Bierstube makes donation to HFS
Hastings Minnesota 745 Spiral Boulevard 55033

One night a month, the Bierstube in Hastings donates half of its food sales to Hastings Family Service. Seems like a simple thing to do, right?

It's also quite lucrative for Family Service. Just last week, the restaurant's owner, Jim Yanz, provided HFS with a check for $13,038. That brings the Bierstube's total donation to approximately $80,000 over the past six years.

"Hastings has been very supportive of the Bierstube over the years," Yanz said. "We appreciate what the community has done for us. We just simply wanted to give back to the community, especially the people who are in need."

Yanz said the annual ritual of handing the check to Chris Koop at Hastings Family Service is turning into one of the highlights of the year.

"It's one of the best feelings in the world," he said. "It's probably one of the top four or five things that I'm proud of in my entire life."

More good news

Yanz also reported that one of the Bierstube's latest television commercials placed second in a statewide poll among Comcast viewers.

Yanz wrote and produced the commercial, which stars his brother, Mike, as "The Bierstube Guy."

In the commercial, Mike Yanz has a daydream on the 15th hole at the Hastings Country Club. The brothers chose that hole because that's the spot where their father, Larry, had a hole-in-one in 1961 and where Mike had a hole-in-one in 1983.

Mike Yanz co-owns the Bierstube in Hastings with Jim Yanz.
