Bid on a cake and help Christian youth group
The specially decorated cakes last year helped to bring more awareness to the new Hastings area Young Life Christian group. A second cake auction is scheduled for this weekend. Attached to the cakes will be special gift items.
The Hastings Area Young Life annual live and silent cake auction will be held Saturday, May 30, at Premier Bank in Schoolhouse Square, 101 E. 10th St.
Preview of the cakes (with attached gift items) is at noon, followed by the bidding from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Bidding can also be completed by calling 612-387-1755 or 438-2311 during the auction.
Proceeds are designated for the group programs, including one of the summer camps sponsored by Young Life nationwide.
The objective of the Young Life group is to show kids that faith in God can not only be fun, but exhilarating and life-changing. There are more than 900 Young Life groups across the United States. The Hastings group is about two years old. Its director is Cory Gibson.
The group was brought to Hastings by a core group of adult volunteers who did some fundraising and hired Gibson. The adults want to continue to connect with and form relationships with young people.
The group is about being there for the kids, Gibson said.
"Our goal, as a Christian organization, is about changing lives through a relational process," he said. "We're out in the community, sometimes just hanging with the kids, going to their sporting events, eating lunch with them, and befriending them."
Meetings are held throughout the year, with the focus on fun activities and getting to know each other, Gibson said.
The gift items attached to the cakes include a houseboat cruise, Minnesota Vikings pre-season tickets, horseback riding lessons, a pool and pizza party, Ben Utecht-autographed photos and a copy of his newly-released CD, five dozen graduation cupcakes by Rivertown Cakes, gift certificates from area restaurants, car care businesses, fitness centers and vet clinics, discount packages from area businesses, a punch card for the Hastings Aquatic Center, and special promotions at photography studios.
Participants will be able to play the "high/low" games for a gift. There will also be face painting for the children.
Anyone wanting to donate a cake or a gift, can contact Laurie at 612-387-1755.
The auction will be broadcast live on KDWA 1460 AM. Bids can be called in or completed online at KDWA.com. The event will run from noon to 3 p.m. The silent auction and preview will begin at noon, and the live auction will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
