Bad start, good finish

At Monday's Suburban East Conference match at Hastings Country Club, things couldn't have gotten off to a worse start for Max Fox.

The key member of the Hastings team started the day with a seven on the first hole. But boy did he turn things around.

Fox played exceptionally well the final 17 holes and ended up shooting a 76 on the day, good for fourth place out of 54 golfers.

"It was a great comeback for Max," HHS coach Pete McGinnis said. "He put the first hole behind him."

Fox's score helped the Raiders shoot a solid score of 324 on the day.

"I was hitting lots of greens in regulation," Fox said. "When I didn't hit the green, I made a lot of pars.

"I was hitting (my driver) all right. Not super. My iron play was probably the best part."

And he wasn't the only Hastings golfer to have a good day after suffering through a bad hole. Alex Wagner had a double-bogey on the third hole but came all the way back to shoot a 75 to place third on the day.

"He played smart throughout the round," McGinnis said.

A good day on the greens helped Wagner, who said he has struggled this year with putting.

"I've hit the ball pretty good this year, but I haven't putted very well," Wagner said. "I've had a couple good rounds here and there and I had one pretty bad round. The other ones have been mediocre.

"I'm going to work a lot on putting here over the next week."

Paul Morris had an 85 for his best score of the year. He had a 41 on the front nine.

Josh Brewster rounded out the varsity scoring for the Raiders with an 88. Bryce Martin had a 90 and Josh Fox a 95.

Conference play concluded Wednesday afternoon at Keller. Forest Lake is the Suburban East Conference champion, but the Raiders still have something at stake -- team members are playing for the right to earn all-conference honors.

Sections begin Tuesday, May 19 at Keller and continue Tuesday, May 26 at Bunker Hills.

Dakota County Invite

Hastings had a team score of 347 at the Dakota County Invitational.

Max Fox led Hastings with an 82. Wagner had an 84, Martin an 88 and Jake Cooper had a 96.

Forest Hills

Hastings shot a 331 at Forest Hills Thursday.

Wagner led Hastings with a 79. Fox had an 82, Brewster an 84 and Morris an 86. Martin shot a 94.
