Words Players Theatre spokesmen said actors do not need to prepare readings.

"We have become so accustomed to 'realistic' theater that the power of actors alone surprises most of us," spokesmen said.

"Thornton Wilder's 'Our Town' changed the landscape of American theater by using a bare stage, with actors who portrayed a series of characters without using props or costumes - and with a script that had no traditional plot.

"In that spirit, no preparation is necessary," they said.

Available parts are of all different sizes, and range from the fairly realistic to the surrealistic.

"In keeping with our sense of Wilder's theater, we will again approach these plays chiefly from the actor's perspective.

"We will have very few rehearsals together. Rather, each actor will understand his or her own character independently, without the director's 'unifying vision' becoming as central as it usually does in theater."

The third annual play festival is part of a six-year project to produce all of Wilder's short plays on stage.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. May 1 and 2 at Crossings, 320 East Ave. Tickets are $12 in advance and $14 at the door for adults, $10 for students.

To sign up to audition, visit Crossings, send an e-mail to crossings@crossingsatcarnegie.com, or call (507) 732-7616.
