In a criminal complaint filed on Tuesday, March 4, Katherine Love Giese, 48, of Hastings, was charged with one count of theft (gross misdemeanor) and one count of motor vehicle tampering (misdemeanor) stemming from a theft from a parked car in the area of West Seventh Street on Feb. 15.

According to the Hastings Police Department, police retrieved video footage from a security camera in the area which depicts Giese committing the offense, which prompted a search for Giese. On Saturday, March 1, officers on routine patrol discovered Giese’s vehicle in the Walmart parking lot and she was taken into custody a short time later.

Hastings police have responded to nearly a dozen thefts from motor vehicles in the past 30 days, many of them believed to be connected. Investigators are continuing to look into those cases.

The Hastings Police Department reminds the community that thefts from vehicles are crimes of opportunity and can often be prevented if residents remember to lock and remove valuables from their vehicles. It is also helpful to call 911 when observing suspicious people or vehicles in your neighborhood.
