Area amateur baseball: Miesville 6, St. Paul Capitals 5 (7 innings)

A shorthanded Mudhens squad shook off the rust and won its season opener Wednesday at Dunning Baseball Stadium in St. Paul.

"It was my absolutely first anything," Miesville player/manager Matt Van Der Bosch said. "I didn't even play catch (beforehand)."

Van Der Bosch said he had tried to schedule practices, but they had been canceled because of the wet spring.

In spite of limited or no repetitions and five regular position players missing from the lineup, the Mudhens had a productive night at the plate.

Pat Pohl, Donny Huemoeller and Van Der Bosch each had two hits. Huemoeller and David Olson both drove in a pair of runs.

"We had pretty good at-bats for the most part," Van Der Bosch said. "We didn't give too many at-bats away which was pretty nice to see."

Miesville used four pitchers and Erik Olson earned the win in relief. Brian Meyers registered the save.

The Mudhens play host to Wanamingo on Sunday.
