Accident report for the week ending May 14
Monday, May 7
Two vehicles collided at 1:44 p.m. in the 1700 block of North Frontage Road. One vehicle backed out of a parking spot and struck another that was driving down the parking lane. There was minor damage.
Tuesday, May 8
A crash at the intersection of Pine and Fifth streets totaled one vehicle at 11:35 a.m. Deborah Jostock, 60 of Hastings, stopped for the stop sign and proceeded into the intersection without regard for other traffic. She told police she was distracted by her children in the back seat. A second vehicle ran into Jostock's passenger side. The second vehicle's airbags deployed and the vehicle was totaled. Jostock was cited for failure to yield. No one was taken to the hospital.
Wednesday, May 9
Police responded to a three-vehicle crash on County Road 47 near Oak Street at 5:59 p.m. There were no injuries and no citations issued. Further information was unavailable.
Thursday, May 10
A boat collided with a tree in the 1000 block of Vermillion Street at 12:38 a.m. Jeffrey McNamara, 38 of Hastings, was driving northbound on Vermillion when his boat trailer separated from his vehicle, veered over the median and crossed the southbound lanes to hit a light pole. The boat disconnected from the trailer and continued to strike a tree. McNamara was cited for having an unsecured trailer.
A city employee reported the railroad stop arm counterweight struck a city-owned Bobcat vehicle while he was spraying for weeds. The counterweight arm was replaced at the scene by CP Rail.
Firefighters responded to a legal fire in the 11600 block of South 122nd Street at 8:47 p.m. A permit had been acquired, but the fire was supposed to be extinguished by sunset. Firefighters extinguished the fire.
Friday, May 11
A police officer observed a minor collision between two vehicles at the intersection of Highway 55 and General Sieben Drive. One car rear-ended another at a speed of about 5 miles per hour. Damage was minimal.
A rubbish fire was reported in the 300 block of East 21st Street at 6:33 p.m. Firefighters found a tractor tire and old refrigerator on fire.
Saturday, May 12
A vehicle backed into another at 2:54 p.m. at the intersection of 17th and Pine streets. The front vehicle stopped at the intersection saw a child crossing the street and backed up to get out of the child's way. She struck a vehicle behind her that was unable to back out of the way in time.
A grass fire was reported at a home in the 500 block of Kendall Drive at 9:13 p.m. The fire was out when firefighters arrived. The occupant told responders she had used gasoline to start a recreational fire, and the fire spread to the grass. She used a hose to extinguish it.
Sunday, May 13
A 2000 Chrysler Sebring caught fire in the parking lot of Terry's Hardware at 10:52 a.m. An employee at the store extinguished the fire. The cause of the engine fire is unknown. Damage is estimated at $5,000. No injuries were reported.
Monday, May 14
Firefighters responded to a carbon monoxide alarm at a multifamily dwelling in the 700 block of West Fifth Street at 6:15 p.m. The resident smelled an odor like rotten eggs. Initial tests showed there was some sort of gas, so responders ventilated the area. A follow up test showed no gas.
