Accident and fire calls for the week ending Aug. 29
Here are the week's accident and fire calls.
A two-vehicle crash was reported at the intersection of Vermillion Street and Vermillion Road at 11:05 a.m. Aug. 22. Kenneth Nelson, 68 of Hastings, was driving southbound on Vermillion St. and stopped in the road for someone cleaning debris from the roadway. As traffic moved forward and stopped again, Diane Lee, 50 of Hastings, rear-ended Nelson. Traffic was moving slowly, and no further action was taken.
Raymond Menard, 73 of Lakeville, reported an unknown vehicle had struck his truck while it was parked in the parking lot of the Dakota County Government Center Aug. 22. The tailgate of the truck had been dented and there was red paint left on Menard's truck. No vehicle matching the color could be found, and the incident occurred out of sight of security cameras. Damage was estimated at about $500.
A two-vehicle crash was reported in the 2000 block of Vermillion Street at 7:09 p.m. Aug. 23. Joel Thomas, 26 of Hastings, was stopped on County Road 47 waiting to turn right onto Highway 61. The report says Bethany Olson, 18 of Hastings, was following too closely, couldn't stop and struck the Thomas vehicle. No citations were issued.
Firefighters responded to a wiring problem reported at the intersection of 190th Street and Park Avenue in Vermillion at 4:18 p.m. Aug. 25. A cable line was down across the road. Because it was not a hazardous condition, the fire department cleared the scene.
Firefighters responded to a report of a downed power line at the intersection of Second and Eddy streets at 8:17 a.m. Aug. 26. One cable line and one power line had been hit by a vehicle. Firefighters contacted Xcel Energy and turned the scene over to them.
A cooking fire was reported at a home in the 1100 block of Sherman Way at 1:01 p.m. Aug. 26. The fire was confined to its container and had been extinguished by the time firefighters arrived at the scene.
A two-vehicle crash was reported at 2:58 p.m. Aug. 26 in the parking lot of Wal-Mart. Jan Featherstone, 49 of Hastings, said she was driving in the traffic lane when Minh Huynh, 18 of Red Wing, backed out of a parking stall and struck her car. Huynh reported he was backing out slowly and was struck by Featherstone and claimed Featherstone was driving too fast. Police reviewed security video and found no clear evidence that Featherstone was speeding.
A crash was reported in the parking lot of Wal-Mart at 12:42 p.m. Aug. 26. Franklin Polifka, 66 of Hastings, was driving in the traffic lane when Sharon Tix, 67 of Apple Valley, backed out of a stall and struck his vehicle. Tix said she did not see the other car behind her. No citations were issued.
Police responded to a report of a damaged phone and cable box in a yard in the 600 block of West 35th Street at 3:05 p.m. Aug. 28. The reporting party said a woman on a blue scooter struck the boxes and left the scene pushing the scooter. Plastic pieces were left behind from the scooter. Police contacted Comcast and Century Link.
Firefighters responded to a minor crash on the Highway 61 bridge at 4:54 p.m. Aug. 29. Three vehicles were involved in the crash. No injures were reported.
