The Hastings Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will hold its largest fundraiser of the year, its Grande Garage Sale, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the First Presbyterian church, 602 Vermillion St.
The proceeds of this sale go toward a $2,000 scholarship, which is awarded annually to the highest ranking female graduate of Hastings High School. This year's sale features clothing for all ages, housewares, holiday items, tools, books and furniture, as well a bake sale.
The 2013 scholarship winner was Sarah Zeien, who had a perfect 4.0 grade point average. In addition to maintaining academic excellence, Zeien was involved in many extra-curricular activities and held a part-time position as a bank teller in Hastings. She has always been interested in science and will pursue a pharmacy degree at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, this fall.
"I am fascinated at how and why things work the way they do,” said Zeien. “In my opinion, there is no better way to practice what I love and help people at the same time than to pursue a career in the medical field."
She extended her appreciation to the AAUW for the scholarship and is excited about her future.
Members of Hastings Branch AAUW have presented this scholarship and appreciate the support of the community through the garage sale.
The AAUW is open to anyone who holds an associate or equivalent degree, as well as those with a bachelor’s degree from a qualified educational institution. Annual dues help to fund legislation related to AAUW’s mission and various court cases.
Regular monthly meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month September through May at St. Philip’s Lutheran Church.
