A group of community members spent early Sunday morning, Sept. 24, pulling weeds from a section of the roadway in Hastings.

The group, organized by council members Tina Folch and Lisa Leifeld, cleaned the area on Vermillion Street from 19th Street to Highway 316.

Folch brought the topic of road blight to the city council Sept. 5. She said that she had noticed many of the medians in town have weed growth. Maintenance of the area is the responsibility of the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The council voted for no action to be taken this year, but it was sent to the operations committee for future discussion. Folch and Leifeld decided to pull some of the weeds themselves in order to clean up the roadway in the meantime.

Folch and Leifeld organized the clean-up during a time with low traffic volume for safety reasons. Another organized clean-up will be Sunday, Oct. 1, along the midtown area.
