Hooked on a new hobby: DNR hosts Karen community members at Lake Rebecca
Some 50 youth and their family members of the Karen community who are recent immigrants from Burma got a chance to learn about one of Minnesota's favorite pastimes at Lake Rebecca on Saturday, July 15.
With help from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the group practiced casting, learned how to bait a hook, then tried their angling techniques on the local bluegill population. The event was co-sponsored by DNR and the Karen Organization of Minnesota, which assists people who have fled Burma to escape oppression. More than 12,000 Karen people live in Minnesota, making it the largest Karen community in the country.
