‘Stay Young at Heart’ activities planned for Wednesday, May 25

The YMCA in Hastings has planned a special free day for senior citizens next week and they are all invited.

The YMCA Senior Health and Fitness Day: “Stay Young at Heart: Stay Active, Stay Brilliant, Stay Calm,” will be held beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 25. Activities continue throughout the day.

Seniors can participate in demonstrations and games and learn about the activities open to them at the Y in Hastings.

This is something that the YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities does to celebrates senior citizens,” said Amy Kohn, Active Older Adult coordinator for the Y. “We offer a taste of what we have and this is their chance to check it out.”

From 9 a.m. to noon, there will be fitness equipment orientations, puzzles, a scrabble game, brain games, blood pressure checks and a chair massage offered by Hastings Chiropractic. Sample Essential Oils will be offered by Arika Hage.

At 9 a.m., guests can also learn about the different classes and programs available to them.

The schedule is as follows: water volleyball, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.; Gentle Yoga, 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.; Silver Sneakers Classic, 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.; blood glucose checks, 10 a.m. to noon; Silver Sneakers Circuit, 10:30 a.m. to 10:50 a.m.; Silver Sneakers Classic class; 11 a.m. to 11:20 a.m.; Silver Sneakers yoga class; 11:30 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.; and Bridge to Fitness intro class, 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The classes are definitely shorter than usual for a reason, said Kohn.

“They will be about 20 minutes in length and give a taste of what it is,” she said. The seniors can sample them and decide if they want to join a class.

Pickleball will be played at the Hastings National Guard Armory from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Y will be open to all seniors all days – from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tours will be available. There will be giveaways and food.

There is another plus to the day. For many senior citizens age 65 and older, a Y membership may be free through their insurance company.
