Rio Gran moves grooming school to new location

No, they're not moving. But Rio Gran is expanding. This fall, the Hastings business will move its grooming school and salon to a new building just north of Hastings, along Highway 61.

Rio Gran, located west of Hastings along Fischer Avenue, is a dog boarding, training and grooming facility that has been doing business here for the past 14 years. The business has grown, said owner Karen Beskau, so they decided to expand into a second location.

Earlier this year, Rio Gran purchased the vacant building at 12260 Margo Ave., right next to Valley Buick GMC. Now they're working on remodeling the interior to accommodate the grooming school and salon portions of the business and some indoor vehicle storage space.

"It's a great opportunity to repurpose a building and have more square footage for our students," Beskau said.

Rio Gran Grooming School and Salon currently operates in a 1,600-square foot space on the same grounds as the boarding and training facilities. The new school will have about 7,800 square feet. The boarding and training portion of Rio Gran will remain at the country site, located at 16440 Fischer Ave. Some grooming services will also stay at the country site.

Beskau said the new location has great visibility and is located right in the crossroads of Rio Gran's existing client base. They have clients from Hastings, Prescott and Cottage Grove, she said, so the new location will be more convenient for many of them. The site also features seven acres of fenced in land, another feature the Beskau family liked as it gives added safety for the dogs coming there. Besides all that, the expansion makes use of an empty building, Beskau said.

Work is still under way on the interior of the new building. Crews are working on creating two levels inside, Beskau said. Rio Gran hired all local contractors to do the work: Egan Construction, Rivertown Electric, Brikk Plumbing, Frandrup Masonry and Binder Heating and Air are doing all the work.

The Rio Gran Grooming School and Salon currently takes on 10 students at a time for a six-month course. Students come from multiple states, including Illinois, North Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

"They come from all over to attend this school," Beskau said.

The school is also the midwest satellite school for the Nash Academy of Dog Grooming, which is based out of Lexington, Ky.
