Hastings Family Service open house is May 19

Hastings Family Service is home.

After years of planning and several moves, Hastings Family Service is now in its permanent location at 301 Second Street E. and the community is invited to celebrate at the open house scheduled for Saturday, May. 19.

Over the past four months, renovations were completed in two phases with Hastings Family Service shifting occupancy from one side of the building to the other as each phase was completed. This weekend, Hastings Family Service will finally be moved into the entire building and the new and improved Clothes Closet and More will be re-opening. The retail store has been closed since January due to the renovation work.

The "Bring the Mission Home" campaign was initiated in 2011 to raise $1 million to help pay for the purchase and renovation of the building. As of right now, $690,270 has been raised toward the goal.

"We will need a lot of support to reach the goal, but the generosity of this community is inspiring," said Hastings Family Service Executive Director Chris Koop. "People understand that this campaign is not about a building. It is about what can be accomplished within those walls to feed the hungry and meet the needs of the community now and into the future."

The renovations include a new grocery-style food shelf (located on the east side of the building), called "The Market," where clients are given more control in the selection process and their children can play nearby in the Mini-Market, a place designated just for kids.

Larger office spaces can accommodate entire families and a private client entrance and welcoming reception area will provide a more confidential experience for the families served. This entrance is from Ramsey Street.

The new Hastings Family Service Donation Center is now in the storefront where Spiral Coop used to be and all food, clothing and monetary donations can now be brought and distributed from a central location to the greatly improved warehouse spaces located at the back side. Volunteers will be ready and able to assist people with doors, carts, or unloading the car. The expanded Clothes Closet and More appreciates the community's donations and patronage as all proceeds from the store support Hastings Family Service programs and services.

The community is invited to celebrate the completion of the renovations and the grand re-opening of the Clothes Closet and More thrift store Saturday, May 19. The store will open at 9 a.m. with special open house activities scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tours will be available and refreshments served.
