Sister Friends consignment shop opens in downtown Hastings

Longtime Hastings friends Trish Davison and Sheri Griffith love clothes.

Come into their new consignment shop at 110 E. Second St., and they enthusiastically describe many of the women's and girls' clothing, accessories, candles and other items already on display. More new items, such as sandals and purses, are coming within the next weeks.

Davison and Griffith owned and managed a Sister Friends in Red Wing for two years before deciding this spring to move it to Hastings where both have lived for years.

"We love it here," Griffith said. She is originally from St. Paul, but has lived here many years.

When the two decided to relocate to Hastings, they contacted the Second Tyme Around consignment shop managers.

"They have helped us out so much," Davison said.

'They have provided good hints," Griffith added.

The vast majority of items in Sister Friends is women and girls' clothing and accessories. Some are brand new, designer items; others have been brought into the store for resale. Sizes range from 0 to 22, with infant clothing starting at size three months.

Griffith and Davison currently have a computed-generated client list of 192 (and it continues to grow).

There is jewelry, much of it American Indian - Davison formerly owned a jewelry store in Red Wing. Those items are currently 50 percent off. Items also include purses, hats, sunglasses, wall hangings, and candles from the Lake City Candle Co.

The inside of the shop has been completely repainted, with fitting rooms built at the back. A contrasting green and pink border offsets the off-white walls.

The name of the shop is what they are, they both said.

"We have been friends for 30 years," Davison said.

For those who bring in items to be sold at Sister Friends (the minimal length of time is 90 days), they earn 40 percent of the sale, with the shop holding 60 percent. That is the typical ratio for consignment shops.

A portion of the shop's proceeds are designated for Pay It Forward, which is a foundation that helps local women battling cancer. The foundation helps to pay bills not covered by insurance. Some clothing items are donated to women's shelters.

For those considering having their clothing sold at Sister Friends, the women ask that it be cleaned, pressed if necessary, current style, and in next-to-new condition.

Sister Friends is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, except for the Cruise-In Saturdays when the hours are extended to 9 p.m. The shop is closed Sundays. The phone number is 437-0312.

Cash, local checks and major credit cards are accepted.
